Title: at the field Tuesday Oct 07
Post by FLC on Oct 7th, 2014 at 9:39pm
Four flyers out today for a fine weather fall session. Paul, rick, Rob and myself. Some wind, but not bad.  A lot of flying.

1 and 2:  the pits today.  lots of airframes for only four flyers.  LOL

3 and 4:  My new eflite p-51.  That very pretty four bladed prop has to go.  One of the slowest airplanes I've ever flown although a very nice flying airframe.  That prop makes a very distinct and very neat sound, but performance wise it's pretty weak.  Only 105kph.  Blah!!!

I can see an APC prop in it's future!

Rob launches his jet.  Shortly before this photo Rick tried a hand launch on this machine resulting in a massive fail.  LOL

He did a much better job on the stick while rob did the second attempt.

The grass was a bit long for its small wheels.

Another successful launch, and 2: Rick with his sequence.  (that photo made about 10 days ago)

Like I said, an apc prop in its future.  My p-51 sporting an apc 12/6 surprisingly pulling only three more amps than the four bladed 9.8/6.

I predict it will go uphill a bit better with this prop.   ;D

Doesn't look as good as that four blader though. But it does have more of an "all bizness" look.  ;D

paint the APC prop black with yellow tips and in the air you will not see the difference, that to me is where it matters.
If I want a plane to look good on the ground I will build a platic model  8-)

PS envious that you were all out flying...need a fix soon. :(

yes, should do that.  Yesterday on landings the neatest thing was the yellow disk as it came down the field for a touchdown.

Despite my lack of enthusiasm about it's speed it was a pleasure to fly, another one that feels locked in and much larger even in calm air due to the gyro system.  And I could really see the gyros working in the crosswind yesterday.

They have the geometry right, the wheels when down sit well ahead of the wing so there is no nose over problem on landing and takeoff even in the longish grass yesterday.

Like my sukhoi which was a disappointment with the stock prop, later to become fast and aggressive, I'll find a prop to do that to the p-51 as well.

Only wish I had the weather to do some testing, I mean flying, today.  ;D

Well gents, an apc 11/7 transforms this airframe into the fighter it should be!

Two flights this morning and its now flying much faster and now looks, sounds and feels like a fighter in a high speed low pass rather than that piper cub wannabe imitation earlier this week.

Loops are now huge and round and effortless! Sustained climb at least three times higher than previously before it starts to breathe a bit.

The GPS was not available this morning so not sure how fast it was flying I'd guess pretty close to the speed of my sukhoi. That'd put it into the 130 kph or so range. I'll GPS check it soon.

It'll never see another four blade prop. As long as it looks like a fighter going by at speed, I don't give a hoot how it looks sitting in the pits. Lol

I might give in a teeny bit and paint the prop black with yellow tips. Lol

Wind was high here this morning and 90 degree cross wind again. The as3x shone once again.

The esc came down cold, the battery just slighty warm. After five minutes the cells were at 3.75. Noticeable was my WOT timer under two minutes. The apc is pulling better at all throttle settings. I think there is enough overhead in that controller to try an 11/8 apc. We'll see.

Interesting to note the wattage from both props is almost identical, a small amount higher for the stock prop. 35 amps stock, 33 apc.

One large difference is the noticeable less braking effect on the apc prop. My first landing was a bit hot today as I was carrying too much throttle from the experience on Tuesday. Quickly adjusted for that on the second flight. Would have loved to fly more but conditions were just too poor.
