ASRCM is Moving
Feb 9th, 2012 at 4:16pm

We are moving our flying site to a higher location.

The new site will give us two full runways, ample pit area, Trees behind us for shade, and lots of parking space.  It is over 50 meters above sea level so no more flooding.   Wink

It is located off of Saint Andrews River Road, then Lynch Road.  If you have Google Earth, it is a large banana shaped field, at approximately 45 04 35N by 63 21 54W.    The picture shows where it is situated.

I am excited and looking forward to getting it up and running.   Cool

A DNR chopper made a forced autorotation there in the 90's. After a complete engine failure. That old dirt road saved their bacon. Good luck on the new flying site. I look forward to seeing it up and operating.

Hey congratulations, that should make a big change in your flying season.

Is it far enough away from homes so you can make some noise?

the new site should change a lot of things glen such as the time restrictions on sunday mornings.  there are a couple of homes about the same distance away, but looks like we'll be flying away from them instead of towards them so noise will be less of a problem.

we're still looking things over as to where the sun sits in the mornings etc before firming up runway space and direction.

definately a big change in when we can start and end the season, perhaps even some flying there in the winter months.   I was there again this morning and could have...actually should.. have taken a plane and flown. access won't be the restricting factor.

yes, that's the spot shawn.  That makes you the "christenee" of the new site.  Congrats!

Joe, Jon and I were there this morning.  Jon had a plane but it was raining and he didn't fly.  You beat him to it.  Grin

And you scared up a bird at 1:45  AND landed right beside the car.  I'm impressed. Grin

those tracks beyond shawn's vehicle are from derrek's truck when he took bill and I up to the field last Monday.  things were snow covered then and the rain today is accenting those.   no damage to the field there paul.

but it would be a good idea not to have everyone in the club driving out there yet.

I've been there four times this week with a few people and we all walked up from the road below each time.

good point paul.  so guys, anyone visiting please leave your car on the road below for the time being.

also note that anyone flying there at the moment would be on their own insurance wise as we have done nothing to have the site maac approved yet, so it's probably best to not fly there until we at least let Derek know what we plan on doing and get things organized.

Congratulations on the new field.  Should certainly stay a bit drier.

Although it is not a MAAC approved field, I understood the new insurance regs said you are covered if you have the owners permission.  So possibly Shawn was properly covered by insurance on his flight, if the owner has given permission.

What would it cost to buy the land and some surrounding it and lease the unused portion back to the existing user for a nominal amount?.  This would protect the site for long term use.  Over a 20 year mortgage the annual payments might be surprisingly low, with current interest rates.

Just a thought.

While watching Shawn's flight videos you can clearly see how little elevator input is required to affect the flight.  The surfaces barely move an 1/8th of an inch maximum during the whole flight, usually it moves an amount you can barely detect.  I suspect many of us have way too much throw setup on our planes, if Shawn's is any indicator.

Wish it were a bit closer...bloody gas prices are almost as bad as nitro. Shearwater may be an option, although it seems that there are restrictions regarding civilian flyers. Not sure why, as the base is no longer active. A bit of a wank if you ask me. They should open the land up for such public use, that is why I give those A-holes at CRA 35% of my wages. They have yet to put any of it to good use. Oh, do I sound bitter.  Cheesy

Wonder what they would do, if you just pulled in and had a few flights? Is the place even monitored by DND anymore?

Sorry man, it's not inside the restricted zones anymore, but it's still inside a few fences. Can you hop on a pogo stick with one hand and hold your planes in the other?  Grin

just remembered some you young babies wouldn't know what a BOMARC was so I post the following:  Grin Grin

In the fall of 1958 Prime Minister Diefenbaker's Conservative government announced an agreement with the US to deploy in Canada 2 squadrons of the American ramjet-powered "Bomarc" antiaircraft missile. This controversial defence decision was one of many flowing from the 1957 NORAD agreement with the US. It was argued by some that the surface-to-air guided missile, with a range of 640 km, would be an effective replacement for the manned AVRO ARROW, which was also scrapped.
