ASRCM Field Update - July 16, 2024

Current Situation - Rain and Damage

As you’ve seen from the recent forum posts, we’ve had a setback with the ASRCM flying site. After some very heavy rain late last week and the subsequent damage caused by an ATV, the site is likely going to need some work. The good news is that other than being waterlogged the runway appears to not have much damage. However, the pits and parking area sustained the brunt of the ATV activity and therefore had the most damage. Until the site dries out it’s difficult to know exactly what work will need to be done. We are attempting to contact the landowner to report the damage and to determine the next steps.

We understand that Club Director Paul McKiel will be stopping by the field tomorrow to re-assess the conditions now that a few days have passed since the rains.  Hopefully we will be able to share more information following that visit.

BBQ Postponement

We’ll be waiting until the field and pit/parking area dries out to determine the extent of the damage and then decide what repairs can be done. Once we know that we’ll be in a better position to reschedule the BBQ.

Future Field Adjustment / Relocation

As some of you may be aware, the landowner intends to relocate our flying site (runway and pits/parking) down the hill from its current location and closer to Lynch Road. As a result, other than addressing the recent damage, we will not be investing any time or resources into site improvements this year like replacing fencing, replacing picnic tables, repairing either roof of the sunshades or improving the access road.  We also want to connect with the landowner in the hopes of minimizing the impact of a field relocation as being on the top of the hill is pretty ideal.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to myself or any of the other SMAS directors if you have any questions or concerns.
